Chop-Chop-Chop

Collection Fourteen

Traction and hydraulic elevators did have in common the controller, signals, fixtures, cab, doors and door operators, the last mentioned tweaking the interest of cartoonists more than any other component. As the human operators were being phased out by the ascendancy of "full automatic control" the irreverent penman zeroed in on the power door operator, whether on passenger or freight elevators. Although electric eyes and devices on the door leading edges protected those moving between lobby and car the ever-contrary draftsman only saw these devices chopping, severing, squashing and over-speeding. Not only did passenger and freight power doors go berserk, the flip-up doors of the drum-machine, underslung sidewalk elevator committed their own kind of mayhem. Good fun; we all knew that the humorists always exaggerated, perceiving white as black - and vice versa! (Chapter Fourteen)
