With the arrival and popularization of fully automatic elevators the human car operators were lost to history - and also to the cartoonists as a target. The full automatic control system and the new accouterments of the cabin more than compensated. The functional cabin and controls were satirized and made overly elaborate, complicated and uninviting. If an individual did pass through the automatic doors unscathed the car interior remained a locus of the completely unimaginable complexity. (Chapter Eighteen).
