As escalators and moving sidewalks becoming increasingly popular people movers in mass transit centers, sports areas and heavily-trafficked commercial areas they obviously became targets for the graphic humorist. Escalators were accepted by the general public as easily accessible, constant speed conveyors with moving handrails synchronized with the steps. Their stainless steel, glass and ornamental metal construction invited entrance to old faithful servants firmly anchored in one place. This stable, comfortable environment was one that the cartoonists loved to picture as ever threatening and unreliable! (Chapter Twenty) .
